Tour highlights
- Heldenplatz
The imposing main square of the Hofburg Imperial complex, this “Hero’s Square” has been the setting for many decisive events throughout Austrian history, including Hitler’s 1938 Annexation of Austria speech from the central balcony. - Michaelerplatz
At this intersection, the true depth of Viennese history can be observed in the open-air Roman ruins, dating back to the city’s origins as a military encampment at the turn of the last millennium. The humble Michaelerkirche, where composer W. A. Mozart’s unfinished Requiem first premiered in 1791, and the locally famous “House Without Eyebrows” mark important milestones in more recent Viennese history. - Stephansdom
Undoubtedly the city’s proudest landmark, this massive cathedral showcases the splendor, suffering, plague, and prosperity of more than five centuries of Austrian history. - Judenplatz
Formerly the centre of a vibrant Jewish community, this small square became ground zero in an attempt to exterminate of the Jewish population in Austria during the early 15th century. It is now home to the city’s Holocaust Memorial and Jewish Museum, located in the fundaments of the square’s former synagogue. - Albertinaplatz
Beneath the shadow of the new titanium wing of the Albertina Museum (the world’s largest collection of graphics), stretches the city’s Monument Against War and Fascism, featuring sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka’s disturbing “Gates of Violence.” Also the location of the original Sacher Hotel (the origin of Vienna’s famous Sacher Torte), this square is a fascinating intersection of imperial and 20th century Viennese history.
